What is Mulch?

Garden Mulch Conditions Soil and Protects Beds & Borders

Mulch is natural bulky organic material spread over the soil to keep moisture content in, improve the soil quality and suppress weeds.

Mulches come in a wide variety of forms, all with different ease of handling, texture, look, colour and ease of use. You can buy compost, bark mulch, wood mulch, mushroom compost, and of course the favoured cocoa shell mulch.

Mulch has a number of other useful purposes. As well as keeping moisture in, it also aids run-off, when excessive water is experienced. For example, a down pour or over watering from a hose. It maintains a good even level of saturation. A good covering of mulch will provide insulation from large temperature variations, and help to keep frosts at bay from delicate roots.

Some mulch also keeps slugs and snails away, and mulch helps to attract useful soil organisms and worms as well. Mulches have also become popular as decorative coverings more recently. This protective covering can be used to improve the ambiance of your surroundings. Rough bark chips can be quickly spread across beds and borders, or around plants in pots.

You can lay and dig in your mulch at any time of year. Make sure that you water it well to bed it in and maintain water content in the soil for your plants. A sheet of mulch 2 inches thick on top of your beds will protect the beds over the winter months.

You could use an inorganic covering such as gravel or pebbles, and while this will protect the ground, it will not impart the additional advantages that an organic mulch will.
